Act 1:

Emily, a 14-year girl marries a widow twice her age. She wrestles with her many in-law and gains the upper hand. She has 3 sons and a daughter. She celebrates her eldest son’s birthday and sends him to England to study. He works at a stable, Emily goes to England to urge him to return.

Act 2:

Emily returns from the market to prepare for the Chinese New Year.
She establishes her dominance in the family but she is estranged from her husband. She faces her struggle and gradually accepts the passing of years.
